Xen hosting VPS Platform:
Our hosting hardware:
Our platform uses the latest intel P4 servers with 800 MHz FSB and HT at more than 3GHz, with 2GB or 4GB of RAM, and 2x200 or 2x300 GB SATA drive using soft RAID1 and LVM, under Linux Debian Sarge (200GB or 300GB of data with RAID1 redundancy) for xen dom0. We currently don't use expensive dual-core xeon platforms, as the cost of a single processor (currently arround 1000 USD) would double the overall retail price. We are convince that the consumer product (the newest P4 with HT and dual FSB) are perfect, as they offer you the best deal with the maximum power.Your virtual server will be hosted in a native LVM partition of physical servers for faster access (no slow NFS access) and we have never more than 10 customers on the same server to provide good quality.
Few words about Xen virtualisation software:
We use Xen virtualisation system because it's simply the state of the art in virtual hosting. With Xen, end users enjoy short cpu, hard drive and network latencies thanks to accurate scheduling (note: this is totaly different from other virtualization technologies like UML, vServer or Virtuozzo). Memory is not shared and not burstable among users, the physical memory is simply split a slice that we rent to you, the same way we do with LVM HDD slices.VPS Traffic:
You will discuss with us of the traffic shaping policy that fits the best your needs when using your Virtual Private Server, and we will help you to setup linux CBQ traffic shaping with either strong or very bustable bandwidth, to protect you against high unwanted peaks but providing a good quality of bandwidth. Bandwidth overage is calculated at the rate of $0.75 each GB over quota, accounted on your end-of-the-month invoice. Monthly costs are to be paid in advance.
VPS Packages and setup:
This server will be already configured for hosting with no added charges. Yes, free setup including the contol panel AND free software maintenance if you choose DTC + Debian stable. Note that it is possible to setup our control panel only on Debian Sarge, even if other OS are supported, installation takes currently too mutch time to make it a comercial proposal.
DEBIAN
- We can setup woody and sarge system as you require, and this solution is
fully managed, including our control panel and it's dependencies. Later you can upgrade to
testing or unstable if you like,
but then software maintainance is no longer our responsability.
CentOS
- We can setup CentOS 3, and later upgrade to 4. CentOS is a very nice open source fork of
RedHat.
Software and operating system maintenance is your responsibility.
Gentoo
- We can setup Gentoo. Gentoo is a very nice source based linux distribution. We suggest you
to take enough memory to be able to recompile the software you will need.

NetBSD
- NetBSD 3.0 can be setup as Xen domU kernel is natively supported by the NetBSD source
kernels.

Each VPS Package comes with:
- 2 IP addresses ($10 a month for each extra IP)
- The above mentioned server with standard and minimalistic (to keep secure) Debian system preinstalled. Other types of Unix can be installed upon request (fedora, centos, gentoo, etc.).
- DTC hosting control panel for easy configuration and server administration IF you take Pack 4 or more
- Technical support (email + phone hotline + monitoring)
- Slave DNS and MX service (if using DTC control panel) on another datacenter
- Firewall and traffic control adivce and installation (iptables and tc utility management)
VPS Selling conditions:
The price of the setup is included with virtual servers (no setup fee at all).
A onetime free backup service is provided upon requests to save your system files, and an automated free of charge ftp backup service can be setup to back up your hosting files directly to your office or your home (using DTC's generated script).
Before your register: read this about the procedure:
When you register your VPS, you will be redirected to our shared hosting registration pay form (the paypal module of our open source web hosting control panel). We are aware of the fact that this is not ideal, but it works and it's secured. You are strongly encouraged to send an e-mail to us stating all the requirements for your VPS like: operating system (Debian Sarge with DTC control panel, Debian (without DTC), NetBSD, CentOS...), type of partitioning you wish tp jave (otherwise we will build one unix partition), and anything else you think we should know. See our contact form or directly send e-mails to: info [ at ] gplhost.com.If you wish, enter a working domain name, setup ns1/ns2.gplhost.com as the DNS server so you can use your domain name using GPLHost before your VPS is setup. When your VPS is ready, we will delete your shared account.
Memory usage and package choice considerations
Please take into consideration that a setup with our control panel implies the use of many servers that use a lot of memory, especialy with email virus and spam scanning. With our normal setup, you have apache + mysql + php + postfix + amavis + clamav + spamassassin + courier + ftp server + etc... With 128MB, your VPS will swap directly when it boots, and with 128MB memroy + 128MB swap is not enough for spamassassin to work properly if you recieve big emails. So please considre to take AT LEAST pacakge 4, and forget about the idea of running it in packages lower than package 3 (in fact even Pack 3 is not something we would advise you to take with the control panel: sometimes some process may die because not having enough memory).Here are some screenshots of the control panel we can setup for free (Debian Sarge only):

This graphic will let you know daily, weekly, monthly and yearly who is the customer that takes all the machine time on the physical hardware. This way you KNOW that the server is not overloaded.
The CPU and Network monitor is, as all the software we do, released in open source. It's written in python as python is what uses Xen, and it's available in our Debian repository (ftp.gplhost.com, ftp.gplhost.sg, ftp.gplhost.fr).
